Museo de Historia de la Computación in Spain has given an interesting contribution to the history of technology. The project recreates the appearance of the legendary Cray-1 supercomputer of 1970s by combining 30 pieces of Mac Mini computers that are no longer used.

-30 Mac Mini device: Combine in a single system and mimics the characteristic C-shaped design of Cray-1

  • Retro aesthetics: The iconic term design of the original Cray-1 is presented in harmonics with modern hardware
  • New to use: Old and non-functional devices gain a new purpose for historical documenting and displaying
  • History perspective: The museum offers a concrete example of computer evolution to visitors
  • Sustainability: A creative approach is exhibited in solving E-waste problem

Cray-1 is known as a machine designed at the beginning of 1970s and a milestone in the history of supercomputers. The value version creates a beautiful combination of nostalgia and contemporary technology. While the project helps visitors understand the development of computer architecture in the museum, it creates awareness on the reuse of electronic devices.

Such artistic and educational projects show innovative ways to protect technology history and move to the future. Combining Mac Minis shows that converting Cray-1 into the form, the old technology can gain new value with creativity, unlike not just skipping.
