Google offers two different software solutions for vehicles. Both carry Google technology into the automotive environment, but the functionality and installation method they provide is quite different. It is important for vehicle manufacturers and users to understand the differences.

  • Android Automotive works as a full operating system where vehicle manufacturers can develop on their own, and can run almost everything in the car
  • Google Built-In is designed in the form of an integrated application set to existing vehicle systems
  • Android Automotive provides an independent platform on the vehicle, while Google Built-In is dependent on infrastructure
  • Android Automotive provides more comprehensive vehicle control in terms of compatibility, Built-In offers limited integration
  • Software update and customization flexibility much higher levels in Android Automotive

Android Automotive select manufacturers can control almost all aspects of vehicle operating system. Navigation, music, air conditioning control and much more work through this system. In turn, Google Built-In has a narrower usage area and is mainly improved for adding additional features to existing car systems.

There are also serious differences in terms of human-machine interface. Android Automotive can offer full screen applications and special automotive experience. Google Built-In provides functionality with a limited interface. What system will be more common in the future, will depend on how much control and flexibility of vehicle manufacturers want.
