The first decision given when developing document question-cevap (QA) systems is rarely examined in detail: the model will be displayed on page images, textual content or both? A new arXiv article isolates this critical selection, four commercial models perform extensive experiments on two different data sets and two context regimens.

Basic findings of the research are:

  • In case documents do not fit the image budget, ** page images provide higher accuracy than text-based approaches in all document lengths* *
  • This difference achieved consistent results on four different commercial models endpoint shows that document structure and layout knowledge are important for QA performance
  • Detection of different behaviors between full document context with gold standard evidence pages Tags
  • Text extraction quality and document complexity have the potential to influence the selected input representation

The study addresses a basic problem in the field of understanding multimodal document. The researchers offer guidance to system designers when choosing the type of input under practical restrictions such as operating costs and memory limitations. The findings help better understand the exchange relationship between image processing capacity and text-based approaches.

These results reveal how critical the selection of data representation in the design phase of document QA systems is, and the future multimodal AI applications will make more informed decisions.
