Evaluation of artificial intelligence systems is becoming increasingly important in today’s technology world. But it makes consistent comparisons difficult to design differently of every benchmark. Here at this point, Benchy project released in arXiv is activated and offers a new solution for standardization.

Benchy is a semantic language and the reef engine designed to test AI programs. Basic structure is quite simple but effective: each benchmark consists of three components—program (P), scoring function (S) and dataset (D). This formula makes benchmarks standalone from AI systems and increases comparableness.

The basic features of the project include:

  • YAML based typ: Benchmarks are prepared in canonical YAML format, each semantic concept has a single valid syntax
  • Ontology support: A shared classification system is used for Task, domain and language
  • Deterministic assembly: Written codes are continuously converted into canonical forma
  • AI independence: Benchmarks and AI systems are kept separately, runs (R) depend on them

Benchy’s design makes it clear for both human and machine. The Canonical YAML approach strengthens the reproducibility (reliability) while reducing the error share. The project is trying to fill the standardization gap required for the objective assessment of the task-oriented AI systems.

This development can be an important step for the AI research community. Especially different organizations will become easier to compare their benchmarks and share results.
