Multilayer Defense Against Preferences From Big Language Models Memory

Large language models (LLMs) have memory capabilities that can protect the context in interactions with users. However, this feature may lead to objective facts of previous user beliefs. A new research published in ArXiv offers a comprehensive framework for the solution of this “light source sycophancy”.
Basic findings of the study:
-Dual layer approach: The researchers suggested 2×2 defense framework that distinguishes between the internal activation level of the model.
- Two types of prejudice: Activation welded sycophancy (induced attitude by model’s training data) and memory-source sycophancy (from the specified user history) are individually discussed.
- New rating: It is determined that existing defenses are focused solely on binding, but not evaluated with internal behavior deviation.
- Defense-in-depth strategy: A stronger defense mechanism is created by applying protection layers at different levels.
This research is an important step towards the security of LLMs using the context of personalization. With remembering user preferences, the model of this information is critical not to remove the objective judgment. Researchers show that the internal and external defense mechanisms work together will play the basic role in making artificial intelligence systems more reliable and neutral. Such studies are the way to increase the reliability of more complex LLM applications.
