In the field of artificial intelligence, the world models means the power tools that simulate the environmental dynamics of agents to plan the results of their actions in advance. In text-based environments, the question of how to train these models is located in the room of researchers, while using language models as a world model.

A new arXiv study started systematically comparing the modern retrievalradied generation (RAG) method with its traditional fine-tuning approach:

  • Fine-tuning allows language model to learn environmental transitions directly by updating parameters and has been dominant paradigma
  • RAG works without changing parameters to enrich the output of the model by taking information from the memory database
  • Although RAG approach was successful in natural language processing, there was no detailed review in the context of world modeling Tags
  • Strong and weak aspects of both methods can occur in text-based simulations
  • The research aimed at understanding which method in which conditions is more efficient Tags

Working, parametric and non-parametric approaches examine basic differences in detail. Fine-tuning model integrates all information but can be sensitive to data. RAG makes it easy to add new information by offering flexibility, but it is dependent on the quality of the purchase.

The most suitable world model design for agents in text-based environments will appear with more clear lines thanks to this research. Implementation of findings can significantly improve the performance of future generations learning systems.
