Although GitHub Wiki looks like a popular tool for project documentation, it began to be accepted as anti-pattern in the developer community. Many software architects and project managers defend that this platform is not suitable for documentation management. Discussions in Hacker News are in high participation in these criticisms.

The problematic aspects of GitHub Wiki are:

  • Version control lack: Wiki changes are kept separately from the main repository, change history tracking becomes difficult
  • Operation power: Changes directly apply without Pull request-like control mechanisms
  • Search and availability: Since the interaction of the documentation with the code is weak, access to information is slower
  • Care issues: When project develops, wiki may stay old and it becomes difficult to manage synchronization business

Experts note that the documentation is more effective in holding in the main code repository (README, docs/ folder) or Notion, GitBook. These approaches provide version control, code review process and automatic deployment options. Especially for open source projects, the progress of documentation on the same life cycle with code is critical.

As a result, although GitHub Wiki is convenient to get simple notes, alternatives that are more reliable and suitable for serious project documentation should be preferred.
