Open source smart home platform Home Assistant has a radical step towards cloud services. The company renames cloud service and removes the cloud icon from its logo. This move is considered a reaction to keep technology giants under control the cloud infrastructure.

Paulus Schoutsen, founder of Home Assistant, was open oral in interview with The Verge:

  • The service was renamed: Home Assistant Cloud was named as “Home Link” -Logo update: Cloud symbol is completely removed from the company’s logo
  • Felsefik posture: With the words of the Founder, “Great technology companies have lost the cloud, we are going out” -Long-term strategy: This move is part of the plan to remove user data from central servers
  • Local control highlight: Home Assistant wants to make the opportunity to work on the local network stronger

This step is a reflection of increasing interest in data privacy and user-controlled smart home solutions in recent years. Home Assistant gives users the freedom to control their devices by offering alternative to centralized cloud services of large-tech companies.

This decision of Home Assistant shows that it is at the beginning of a movement focused on open source technology and data privacy. Users now want to get rid of cloud dependence and provide local control.
