JPEG XL is a image format that reveals in 2021 and promises quality protection with better compression rates. However, this new standard has not managed to be widely adopted as opposed to expectations and brought serious discussions in the tech community. Gianni Rosato’s analysis post reveals the basic causes behind this failure.

Problems with JPEG XL are collected under the following titles:

  • Zayif industry support: Browsers and software developer tools are unwilled to support format as standard; only several platforms offer partial support. -: More old formats such as WebP and HEIF, show enough performance for most use scenarios and offer greater compatibility. - Lack of adaptation on the user side**: Social media platforms and web publishers have avoided investing in format change.
  • Patent and licensing concerns: The patent map of the format is complex and this situation has created legal ambiguity for some organizations.

No matter how good technology is real quality and performance, it does not experience a standard without being accepted throughout the industry. The story of JPEG XL shows that the technological superiority is not enough for success in the market alone. The future adoption of format seems weak without strong platform support and strategic partnerships.
