An important return in space research. NASA and European Space Agency (ESA) decided to cancel the mission of Mars Sample Return (MSR). This decision led to broad discussions in the research community by bringing one of the most ambitious projects of space science.

The main purpose of the project can be summarized as follows:

  • To bring rock and soil samples collected on Mars surface by Curiosity rover to Earth
  • To analyze examples in laboratories to investigate past or current traces of life on Mars
  • Planning a multi-stage operation requiring high financial budget and complex technology
  • Designed as a project intended to be completed in the middle of 2030s
  • Be asked to take the basis for Mars research of future generations

Financial restrictions were the most important enemy of this project. Increased costs and budget issues are required to focus on both NASA and other priorities of ESA. Although the decision creates frustration among scientists, institutions started to research alternative ways. Future Mars missions and technological developments can allow such sampling processes to be performed more economically. Now, Mars has entered a new era.
