Large Language Models (LLM) have started to be integrated into traffic signal control systems to streamline traffic. While LLM’s human-like logic execution capabilities are seen promising in this field, they have a serious problem of existing methods: they simply look at the final results and don’t distinguish the right and wrong reasoning steps.

The new method proposed by researchers called ProcessLight aims to solve this problem directly:

-Step level inspection: It separates the current and faulty reason by independently assessing each decision step

  • Selective update: The model only allows you to learn from the correct logic steps, there is the mechanism that filters misleading steps
  • Human legislative decision: Traffic control decisions are explained and guaranteed to remain traceable
  • More effective training: Preventing the update of beneficial and harmful learning signals together, increasing model efficiency

Traditional methods of LLM are mixed with successful and unsuccessful reasoning processes, since they only train on the basis of the last result. ProcessLight focuses on learning truly effective decision mechanisms of the model by checking the quality of each step individually. This is critical especially in traffic flow optimization, complex and dynamic decision environments.

The study leads to enhancing the reliability of LLM-based automation systems in areas requiring supervision. Such developments in urban traffic management open the way of smarter and responsible decision-making mechanisms.
