Fintech company Revolut started to test a new face recognition payment system in the UK, which aims to convert shopping experience. The system allows customers to pay without removing wallets or cards when purchasing products. Although this technology will make life easier, serious questions arise in privacy and data security issues.

The main features of Revolut’s face recognition solution are:

  • Non-contact payment: Customers can complete transactions by showing only their faces in the case
  • Speed and convenience: No need to carry card or phone; authentication takes place instantly
  • Pilot program: Currently tested with limited number of users in selected stores in UK
  • Biometric data: The system records the facial properties digitally and compares each transaction
  • Security layer: Aims to block fake photo or video usage with live facial detection

Technology undoubtedly offers a fast and convenient payment method, but there are concerns about the collection, storage and protection of biometric data. Many privacy advocates highlighted the risks of keeping such sensitive personal data in central systems. Furthermore, questions about the accuracy and fair implementation of facial recognition technology continue.

This initiative of Revolut is an indicator of the transformation in the financial technology industry. If it can balance between convenience and security, this system can change how to do future payments. However, this pilot, which will be closely monitored by regulatory institutions and users, will require strict implementation of data protection standards for success.
