While surveillance technologies are becoming increasingly common in the digital age, sousveillance concept offers a new perspective to this unbalanced relationship. The term derived from words of French “sous” (gold) and English “veillance” (obvency) refers to the fact that individuals become active observers by subscribing traditional surveillance hierarchy.

This concept manifests itself in various sizes:

  • Corporate accountability: The police intensity is strengthened by justice mechanisms by recording dominant behaviors and state operations
  • Transparency: Public space events and private corporate applications can be documented through social media and smart devices
  • Personal protection: Widely used in wearable cameras and mobile devices for personal security purposes Tags
  • Corporate inspection: Employees can document workplace conditions, work safety and low fee applications

Sousveillance reveals important questions at the intersection of technology and human rights. Distributing the monoporate surveillance capacity of supervisory institutions is a critical development in terms of the protection of democracy and individual autonomy. However, these methods bring complex issues such as personal privacy, legal framework and ethical limits.

This new approach to power balances between technology and society continues to question how justice and transparency can be achieved in the digital world.
