A new scam method appeared on Spotify and similar music streaming platforms. The malicious actors transfer royalties to them by uploading unauthorised fake songs to the profile pages of legitimate artists using open in the distribution system. This method reveals the weakness of the platform authentication and content audit mechanisms.

The basic tactics used by scams are:

  • Profile plug: Creating fake musician accounts using the name and information of real artists
  • Indict deficit: benefit from missing verification procedures of music dispenser services
  • Royalte work: Collecting income from Uploaded fake songs in illegal ways -Wide effect: the profile page of thousands of artists is detected by this method

Platforms need more strict authentication protocols to combat this problem. At present, artists can request the removal of content to the platforms when they discovered unauthorized songs. However, this reaggent approach is not enough to restore the damage already given.

Music industry and streaming services should be urgently cooperating to close this security cavity. Stronger verification systems and artificial intelligence based content control are critical to prevent similar attacks.
