California’s MPs scored an important step by decisioning they’ve received with voting in order to support open source software community. Popular open source license software such as Decision, GPL, MIT, BSD and Apache are exempt from age verification obligation. This move is worth eliminating administrative obstacles that may occur in the process of software development.

The main components of ageing change are as follows:

  • GPL (GNU General Public License), MIT, BSD and Apache licensed software are exempted from age control systems
  • Linux and other open source projects get rid of legal compliance costs
  • Software developer community has decreased risk of blocking growth and collaboration
  • Open source ecosystem has become more convenient for speeding technological innovation

This decision aims to alleviate complexities that occur especially in the implementation of age verification regulations in the software industry. Open source software is often developed and managed by volunteer developers. Therefore, it has become almost impossible to implement age verification mechanisms to these projects without central structure.

This decision of California can play a leading role in bringing similar exemptions to other states. The continuingability of the open source software development process will continue to stay as one of the basic stones of the technology industry.
