City planning comes at the beginning of complex engineering issues. Planers who balance many factors from cost to service quality, from infrastructure to environmental management, often they had to work with trial-free method. Now this may vary: new research published in arXiv shows how artificial intelligence can be used in urban planning field, by revealing a sandbox agent frame called CityPlanner.

The main features of CityPlanner include:

  • Flexibility that can make practical choices to practical goals from large candidate operations
  • Decision mechanism considering real world restrictions such as cost and service quality
  • Ability to solve adaptive problem, not connected to fixed formulations
  • Offer alternative to task specific representation and restricted management
  • Ability to produce programmable solutions in urban infrastructure development

Most of the available optimization and consolidation learning methods are designed according to a specific task mold. While this approach is effective in fixed problems, there are limitations in dynamic and multi-factor areas such as city planning. CityPlanner offers a more general framework that surpasses this problem.

This research shows how artificial intelligence can find practical applications in public policy and urban development areas. In the future, similar agent-based systems in city management can help build more efficient and sustainable cities.
