While worries about the display time are increasingly increasing, a new smartphone project called Freckle offers a radical solution: designing a mobile device that encourages children to go out. This initiative, aiming to recreate the connection of digital natives with nature, shows that technology can be the solution until the problem of technology.

Freckle’s approach is based on the following principles:

-: The device is designed to promote short, purpose interactions instead of long-term indoor environment usage -: Location sharing, map navigation and external environment activities such as:

  • Ebeveyn control: Parents offer comprehensive tools to monitor their children’s safety and activities
  • Healthy usage habits: Features that will reliably support children to explore independently

While technology industry promotes traditionally more display times, initiatives like Freckle represent a trend that questions this paradigm. Children’s development experts continue to specify a strong bond between adolescent depression and anxiety, such solutions provide realistic alternatives to families.

This project proves that technology designers can make user health stand out from profit maximization. If successful, we can also offer a model to adopt healthy design principles in other device manufacturers.
