Agents based on large language models (LLM) can make smarter decisions when storing and re-using past experiences. However, the new research shows that these memory mechanisms lead to an unforeseen problem**: even if the agents are completely accurate, they have wrong results by overreliable information they remember.

The research team defines this problem as “over reliability” (memory over-reliance) and tested in memory architectures with various data sets:

  • Memory was useful if past experiences are transferred directly to existing task Tags
  • If only a part of the experience is transferred, agents do misleading interests
  • Properly stored and successfully received information can cause failure
  • Problem revealed in the design of multiple memory architectures Tags

This finding points a critical problem in the design of artificial intelligence systems. While the agents remain very dependent on what they remember, they ignore contextual differences and do incorrect generalizations. Specifically in complex tasks, similar but in different cases the fact that the information is partially enforceable, the agents can take in the wrong direction.

Research shows that future LLM agent systems need to use memory more selectively. Understanding how to better assess the bond and reduce the time of trust to the memory will be basic steps that will improve the reliability of artificial intelligence agents.
