Meta reveals one of the most clear indicators of the competition environment in the social media sector, as of Thursday, ByteDance’s TikTok ads have been enforced the decision of baning across platforms. This move, previously informed by Bloomberg, contains third-party paid marketing messages, not only direct TikTok ads, but also directing to the platform.

The spokesperson of Meta Christopher Sgro clearly revealed the reason for decision:

  • Inclusion scope: All commercial ads from ByteDance and links to TikTok are removed
  • Coğrafi effect: Prohibited US and several other countries
  • Hedef: Third-party advertising networks can not be distributed byteDance’s campaigns
  • Söylem: Meta management stated that the opponent will not help their users from their own platforms -Timing: The decision is applied on Thursday, highlighting its strategic importance

Christopher Sgro’s “We do not have to advertise from a competitor to remove people from our platforms” description summarizes the voltage between two platforms. This step is seen as a commercial counteracter that Meta’s TikTok has rapidly increased popularity.

It has wide diameter effects of banning. ByteDance will no longer run paid marketing campaign on Facebook, Instagram and other Meta platforms. This means the removal of a competitor platform that reaches the young user audience from the advertising ecosystem of Meta. Other advertisers who send traffic to TikTok will also be affected without this prohibition.

This aggressive step-by-step of Meta shows what the competition between platforms in the social media industry is concentrated. Commercial restrictions and bans now seem to become a natural part of the market.
