Nokia Design Archive platform was launched by Aalto University in order to protect the industrial design heritage of Nokia, one of the most effective companies in technology history. The digital archive documents design decisions, prototypes and technological limitations of the era in critical periods where mobile phones shape.

  • Digital access: All archive content is open to the public online, free accessible by researchers and designers
  • Coated collection: Developed subject designs and technical drawings from 1990s to 2000s
  • Design documents: 3D models, concept drawings, material selection and ergonomic analysis
  • Cultural value: It shows how the industrial design philosophy evolved early in the digital age

Archive is a valuable resource especially for designers, students and technoists. The aesthetic and functional approaches seen in Nokia 3310, 7650 and N-series are thought to be still effective in the design of today’s mobile devices. The platform is important to see the intellectual signature that the company left in portable technology.

Since such archives play a critical role in the protection of industrial design training and technology innovation history, similar projects are expected to be supported by other leading technology companies.
