Today, the word “robot” is used so often in the media, advertising sector and daily conversations, we left to question the real meaning. Your dishwasher is offered as a robot vacuum cleaner or programmable coffee machine “robot”. Yet this definition is dewatering the success of authentic robotic technology and artificial intelligence. The concept of robot is actually a social building.

To understand the basis of the problem, we need to consider the following points:

  • Otomation is not robot: Pre-programmed, devices that perform certain tasks are simple machines; they are not adaptive or self-learning systems.
  • Marketing trap: Technology companies are trying to make products more attractive by pasting the “robot” label to simple electrical appliances.
  • Real robot definition: It should be systems that interact with the environment using robots, sensors, software and mechanical parts.
  • Halk perception etc. technical reality: Although consumers upload “smart” and “otonom” meanings to the robot word, most household appliances do not carry these properties.

If your dishwasher gives a signal at the end of the cycle, this does not mean that it has its “blood”. In the same way, a sensor-based vacuum cleaner is not capable of making decisions in real sense even if it can detect and pass physical obstacles. Robotic term should express real progress in AI and autonomous systems

The technology sector and media should clarify the meaning of the word “robot”, consumers should also question the marketing jargon. Otherwise, our expectations for robotic technology will break from reality.
