SPICE (Simple Protocol for Independent Computing Environments is an important open source protocol that provides graphic, audio and input device control in virtual desktop environments. However, the project slowed down due to the lack of formal care and development. The vd agent project launched by Nefarius offers a community-oriented solution against this problem.

The basic objectives of the project can be summarized as follows:

  • Update and improving SPICE protocol in accordance with modern requirements
  • Creating sustainable development model supported by open source community
  • Increase the availability of protocol in virtual machine and remote desktop solutions
  • Ease of community contributions and eliminate technical obstacles

SPICE is a critical infrastructure component that provides remote access from data centers to personal computers. Not to allow the protocol to die, the open source ecosystem will remain healthy and reduce dependence to alternatives.

This initiative of Nefarius shows the stability of the software community on public tools protection and development. Ongoing studies on GitHub show SPICE can have a forward-looking future.
