Large language models (LLM) are increasingly located in the center of more financial decisions. However, these powerful tools can pose risk not only in individual agents, but systematically occurring problems. The researchers developed an experimental framework called FRAIL to understand the size of this danger.

FRAIL reveals these findings by placing LLM agents into three different dynamic financial environments:

  • Coordination failure: Individually logical decisions can cause financial instability
  • Chain reactions: The protection movement of a agent can push others to move in the same way, which can lead to market collapse
  • System-level risks: Secure agents that are individually tested, can create unexpected crises when working together
  • The necessity of cysticification mechanisms: The existing control systems will not process complex interactions formed by multiple agents

The study highlights that financial AI security should now be addressed at ecosystem level, not from the perspective of isolated agents. Macro mechanisms such as bank reserves, liquidity management or market stability are redesigned to manage LLM networks.

These findings indicate that artificial intelligence systems should be thoroughly tested in terms of coordination dynamics before integration into human financial markets.
